Shibari Beginner Tutorial Series

Part 01

Welcome to my Single Column Tie tutorial, learning the the hon-musubi knot.

This is an easy foundation tie, used to create a fix point on your partner's body.

The word hon-musubi translates as “main knot” and refers to the first knot of a tying that serves as an anchor for other elements that build on it.

It is often deliberately tied loosely and not blocked any further so that it can be opened quickly in an emergency.

Start by taking the middle of your rope, called the Bight and wrap it three times around your partner's wrists.

Then take the Bight and go over and under the two other layers. Keep two fingers of space in the loop so you don't tie the wrists too tight.

From this cross position you create a loop with the working end, bring the Bight through and pull it tight.

And that's your Single Column Tie!
